I think it would be nice to have a search toolbar on top of members page.
Search may run through the columns being displayed.

This patch for profile module can be modified for members module: http://drupal.org/files/issues/profilesearch.patch

Could you provide a link to the issue to which this patch was attached, that might help.
This is not going on my urgent todo-list but I'll certainly keep this in mind.

Is there any news on this? When you run a site with several hundred members (and growing), a search feature would be really helpful!

what kind of fields are you wanting to search on, just the profile stuff?

Well, searching through the fields of the profiles - the admin should be able to set up which fields users are able to search and ideally it would be a simple search interface that searches all profile field the admin has enabled by default, but also allows user to search specific fields.
