following up to http://drupal.org/node/1585922, i have isolated this issue in the following way:

going to apache solr search configuration, there are options to index:
1) content types (any/all)
2) files (type: file)

when i select/enable 'file' the index will properly index previously attached files for any node BUT will produce an error when trying to save or publish any new or existing/edited node with a NEW file attachment (old files will stay in place)

when i disable the "file" tick box in apache solr configuration, the problem goes away.

is this a "solr attachments" issue or an "apache solr" issue?

please advise.

sorry nick - meaning to test this week (was not working on site search this past couple of weeks, focused on theming all month)
