great job on the module!
two questions: one support and one for feature request:
1. when I allow 'access user profiles' for authenticated users I can't see their 'personal folder' directory (the one created by IMCE). However, even though I can't see it I can open their files assuming I know the path, i.e. /files/u14/example.pdf
was this meant to be so? it is pretty contradictory with the fact that a user can't see the 'personal folder' in the first place.

2. it'd be great to see IMCE being able to communicate to the buddylist module - and that way the user can access other user's files only if he/she is his/her buddy. What do people think? Would that be hard to implement?

Accessing a file is related to the file download method of drupal. When it is set to PUBLIC you cant control downloads. Even if you set it to PRIVATE you cant control file downloads with IMCE. There probably exists a contributed module for it.
I'll consider the idea of buddylist integration for IMCE6
