MassMailer .... ouch!

I've never used the module, so I can't help you, but your question is awfully vague. You've typed 4 paragraphs about your experience, but only 1 sentence gives any clue as to what the problem is:

... but once I generate a mailing to go out, it doesn't go any further than Sumbit.

(I assume "Sumbit" is "Submit").

I was working with mass mailer in civicspace in the last few weeks. No matter what the configuration, I could hit submit, the site would say that it went out, but no email made it anywhere.

So I doubt that it is you causing the problem since in civicspace the module is already installed.

Crunchywelch is the maintainer of this module.

He says that he made a new version. It will be integrated in CivicSpace 0.8.0.3, due anytime now.

I don't think it's available from the download page under the 4.5.x tab. However, you might want to try out the cvs version.

I'm not able to use MassMailer too. I'm waiting for CivicSpace 0.8.0.3. But if this version take too much time to go out, I may try the cvs version.

drupal CVS is the current version, civicspace get it's version from there. Right now the 4.5 branch is updated along with head, so if you get the tarball you should have the most recent version.

If you are processing the queue (admin/massmailer/queue), what message do you get? It should return at least a message that says the phplist verision and tell you if it has messages to process. If it is just a blank grey box, that means that probably the phplist/bin/phplist file is not executable. You have to chmod this file to 0755 or something appropriate for your system setup. In the phplist INSTALL.txt file I say to use 0755, which is owner read/write/execute and group/world read/execute.

If you can recieve mail from your drupal site, like password reminders and such, you should be alright as far as sendmail is concerned.

I've been struggling with MassMailer as well.

Points:

1) Have a brand-new from-scratch installation of 8.0.3,
2) Created a mailing list in admin
3) Created a message to the list
4) Tried to "process" the message.
5) Log shows:

6) The line in question is definitely a SHELL_EXEC command that
tries to invoke PHPLIST on the "command line".

No matter what I try, I cannot figure a good way to allow this SHELL_EXEC to work.

Is there NO way around the Safe Mode problem? I asked my ISP and
they refuse to turn off Safe Mode ...

On another front, I was able to download the "SMTP trick" at :

And the "example.php" works (!) after a minor change, so I KNOW
that sending EMAIL out is POSSIBLE ... any ideas?

My next attempt will be to muck around with the "shell_exec" function call at

I have drupal 4.5.2 and CVS version of massmailer.

When i click on Process Message Queue i see that:

Ok after reading all the posts here and on CivicSpace I found the solution from Crunchywelch on CivicSpace. If you're running Fedora Core 3 with a normal install, you'll have to do the follow to get it to work, and yes it does work, but I'm sure to find more bugs:

1) Follow the already provided instructions.
2) Copy the config.php in \modules\phplist\config.php to a new directory at \modules\phplist\phplist\config\config.php
3) Edit \modules\phplist\bin\phplist to just read:
php modules/phplist/phplist/admin/index.php $*
Take EVERYTHING ELSE out of phplist.
4) Edit line 25 on \modules\phplist\phplist\admin\index.php to read:
if (PHP_SAPI == "cgi") {
not "cli"

...and voila it will work. Hope this helps someone out there.

I set up massmailer from CVS today on a drupal 4.5.2 installation with phplist 2.9.4. Everything seems to work well so far. I've created a "test" and "announce" list and sent several sets of test emails by clicking "process queue" and by letting drupal's cron.php trigger it.

Here's the dilemma: the emails are sent by the web server process, so the Return-Path: in the header says "apache07@mywebhost.com". I set the From: address to one in my hosted domain, and that works fine for replies. But I assume all the bounces are going to come back to apache07@mywebhost.com...

I deliberately put some bogus email addresses on my test list and sent more emails. Instead of an error, phplist/massmailer just reports they were all sent successfully. I assume this just means they were successfully given to the MTA.

I can live without the "auto-bounce-detect" feature of PHPlist being integrated into massmailer. But I do need to receive actual bounce messages somewhere so I can remove dead addresses from the lists myself. Any ideas?

For anyone afraid of these gigantic threads, the following is what I followed to get the Massmailer module working.

First I was getting some PHP errors, and then the "config file not found" error
but after a long afternoon, I finally have my massmailer sending. I am using CivicSpace, which is a 4.5 release, but I don't see why it wouldn't work for anyone else. These are the two forum comments I followed, plus the little bit at the end that I needed.

If you follow these, you should get to the point where you click on "process message queue" in Administer > MassMailer. This will then give you an error along the lines of:

"Could not find default/settings.php"

Then copy the file "(civicspace install dir)/includes/conf.php" and place it (you'll have to create the directories) "(civicspace install dir)/sites/default/settings.php"

Now, click on the "Process Message Queue" it should give a little message about a cron job. AND IT WORKS!!!
I'm also on Dreamhost, but that's another forum.

When I process the queue I get the folowing message:

Any ideas?

I've been reading through the posts here and googling around, but I can't get rid of the "cannot find config file" problem. I've tried with the original phplist script in bin as well as the truncated one with just the line php modules/phplist/phplist/admin/index.php $*
I've copied the config.php file into phplist/config/config.php I simply cannot get it to work.

One post said something about re-installing phplist. Should I download it from drupal or from phplist.com? If the latter, are there any things I need to change?

I'm running the version that was installed with civicspace 0.8.0.3.

Can someone please write an install of this module line for line, no abreviations, everything from top to bottom. I've installed almost every module drupal offers and this one is kicking my butt. I've gone through this the last 48 hours and essentially get as far as hitting the process que button and nothing happens.

I've followed and tried most of the solutions offered in this thread and for the life of me I don't know what I'm doing wrong. If anyone would be so kind as to contact me directly or post better instructions I'll be your new best friend.

Nothing gets sent. I followed all the instructions :(

After 4 very frustrating days of trying to install various mass mailers versions on my fresh 4.5.7 drupal install (the one that self-installs from an apt-get install) I threw in the towel and figured out how to install the 4.6.5 drupal. I got the 4.6.0 version of mass mailer, and it worked after following the directions. My advice - anyone still trying to get this to work with 4.5.x, forget it - move on.

I may have your solution. - I first set up PHPlist independently of drupal. At first I couldn't figure out why everything was working, but no emails were sent.

lists/config/config.php is the PHPlist config file. - Under the section 'debugging and informational' is the following parameter :

# if test is true (not 0) it will not actually send ANY messages,
# but display what it would have sent
define ("TEST",1);

In my installation, the default was at 1... ie PHPlist was running in test mode and not sending any messages.

I still have to figure out how to get massmailer and PHPlist to work together, so I may be off the mark here... but worth checking.

adding those dots also fixes this error:
