I turned on filemanger, configured its settings, but acidfree doesn't show up in my list of modules on the module administration page. I have not had trouble with any other modules. Is this release compatible with drupal 5.2?

Acidfree 5 doesn't require filemanager.

Acidfree-5 should be compatible with all Drupal 5.x releases. I have not ever seen what you are describing.
