Token Default Value renders more than the 160 character limit set

I have a meta keyword field where I set a default value with a token in the content type field setting. This works as expected with the exception of the character limit (set at 160). If the keywords for the token are more than 160, they are all still rendered in the code. Is this inherent in the nature of a token as opposed to typing in the field manually on the node edit page? In other words, does a token override the character limit for the field that has been set? (160 characters in my case.)
