I have a vocabulary with over 6000 terms in a hierarchy of 5 levels. When creating a node and selecting terms from the vocabulary I would like to have a solution which had five drop-downs which were dynamically filled (via AJAX?). So, for example, initially only the top-level terms are loaded and then when the first top-level term is selected, the second drop-down is filled with the term's direct children, and so on for the other levels. This should mean far fewer terms need to be loaded into the node and make selection much simpler.

I've looked through the forums for solutions to this but haven't found one. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

As far as I know, there is no simple solution, but the links there might get you started.
Note that the Content Taxonomy solution only goes 3 levels deep.
