The hosting companies forum currently reads "For questions about commercial Drupal hosting." which implies that no ads are allowed. Still ads for hosting companies are posted there a lot. I think we should make it clear that it's not a place for advertising your hosting company in the description.

Some may argue that no ads are allowed in any forum and we don't explicitly say it in any other one, but the hosting forum is different because ads may seem on topic. If you have a hosting company and you're offering a special deal to Drupal users or something, I can see putting an ad there and not thinking you're doing anything wrong. So I think we should make it clearer.

Talked with Kieran about this, since we now offer paid advertising in a block on that forum. I wanted to know if we should change the description to something like, "No ads allowed. If interested in paid advertising for this forum, please contact the Drupal Association."

He said that it's a little weird to all of a sudden throw the hammer down on people if they've been doing this for years, which is true. He also recommended that a better approach might be to start a thread in the forum asking the forum people themselves what they feel is on/off-topic. Personally, I would find it incredibly annoying as an end-user looking for non-biased hosting recommendations to have to sift through advertisement posts to find that info, but of course I also don't use that forum. :P

I don;t think that there should be any ads in "Hosting" section. It shall be opened for discussions not for spammers. You'd create advertising forums and to charge for posting there. The money would go for Drupal project and hosts who post there will be well-established companies who want both to promote their services and to support Drupal.
