This is a spin-off from: #1665450: Path alias target when using pathauto that can be implemented after #860748: Config for mappers?.

We want to be able to configure the mapper behavior of Path alias when using Pathauto module.

I checked both the issues listed on the issue but I see that the changes are not applied on 7.x branch.
I have updated the patch to work with pathauto submitting here
