I think in one of my earlier patches I removed the first call to mailhandler_switch_user() so user wasn't being saved. The initialization seemed to work in a really odd way. I reimplemented mailhandler_switch_user to use a user stack...

this function needs to implement the new session_save_session() function (see end of session.inc in 5.2+). that makes impresonation safer.
