Some might help this drupal community by adding code, writing modules, helping out in the fora or do some documentation. For some time you can support drupal as well by donating money in the "donate" area. In case you want to add something to this community as well but are unable to code, make a theme, document and you don’t have any money to spare on drupal, here is your change to help the community!
It is time to join efforts of all drupal users to bring in more cash for better promotion, remain the high uptime of drupal.org and add more features without costing you anything! All you have to do is add some code to your theme to show a google ad(sense). The revenues of this ad might be anywhere between 10 dollarcents and 8 USD per day for a busy drupal site. But if a couple of dozen drupal sites will run the ads, this might sum up to a lot of money per month! The downside? Your will have ads on your site / within your layout, the google adsense bot will visit your site often and you give a way how many visitors with a javascript enables browser visit your site to Google.
On the upside; money! Lots of money if you run a quality site, to be donated to the drupal project and hence coming back to you in quality and quantity of code.
According to the adsense requirements, one can use multiple sites for one account. So that should not be a problem. So hereby I ask you, are you interested in having a ad on your site (see examples) for the benefit of the community? If so, please leave a comment here. If enough people will be positive about this option, I’ll work it out further.
If we agree we should start this, we have to discuss some other stuff. Like do we want to select what kind of sites (politics, religion, MSFT bashing etc) we would select and do we want to donate the money to drupal or to paid modules?
That can be solved later, but please leave your thoughts in this thread.

it sounds good. I tried
it sounds good. I tried adding google adsense to phptemplate(node.tpl.php) box_grey theme but it didnt show up when the page loads. i tried placing after the footer,
<?
if ($footer_message) :print $footer_message;endif;javascript adsense goes here
Validate XHTML or CSS.
print $closure;boxes
these are many threads on how to add a javascript code to a box (search javascript + adsense). the real question is not if you can, but if you are willing. Willing to add "your" money to a generic account that will donate the money to drupal.

Generic ++
Bert,
Do you mind opening such a generic account? I will gladly add Google Ads to your site. We should then use channels to keep track of how many money each site makes.
We should also have at least two or three persons with the details of that account. I volunteer for that.
And if this solved you problem, would you be so kind to report back that it helped? This will help others whom are looking for the same solution.

Hate to push my luck, but I might get a better response if http://drupal.org/node/17905 is promoted to the frontpage. We still have to do some stuff. I'm willing to dontate as others might. But I am not that fond on paying the taxes of all the google ad payouts (esp in the Netherlands!). So for a generic account we might we might have to setup a drupal foundation that wont have to pay taxes. This was discussed some time ago on this list but I dont remember the outcome of this. Anyone? (put response please in thread on site)

On the plus side, nobody of the drupal team got sick by/of me/my flue by me not showing up ;-)

ORG. not going to happen soon.
we will not get an organisation anywhere soon. So in the mean time, is there anyonw (maybe Dries himself) who wants to set up a Google Adsense account that will donate the money onto the same account as where the paypal funds go?

I'll create one
I'll create one. Google will get back to me in two days. Details to follow.
I thought about
this myself. in fact I though about using my own account for it. I have no problems if people trust me to donate this money to drupal.org. However, the money *you* will get on your account if a dozen of high traffic / profile sites participate will be in the order of a couple of hunderd dollars per month. Now I dont know how the situation in Belgium is and how much money you make as a student, but in the Netherlands I should be paying around 50% of this money to the state. So either half the money people contribute goes to the state if my account would be used (and I have some issues with other financial institutions as well) or I'll end up paying the taxes myself.
Neither of these two options are preffered from my point of view. So I wanted to create a foundation ("stichting ter promotie van het-drupal-gebeuren in zijn algemeenheid en wereld dominantie in het bijzonder").
If you will use your own account, please check with someone who know the laws in Belgium to make sure you wont end up with a tax slip.

reason why i will not volunteer
The tax income is the exact reason why i will not volunteer. Dries, have you got acces to a vzw or so, where we can "save" the funds untill we have a better situation? Otherwise, indeed, Dries, you might get into tax trouble.

If this solved you problem, please report back. This will help others whom are looking for the same solution.
Next time, please consider to file a support request.

Excelent idea
I consider this an excelent idea. Especially for people who:
- Doesn't know or doesn't have time to learn PHP or other related programming languages in order to help with the code.
- Doesn't have money in order to donate.
- And really appreciate this project and actually maybe profiting from it.
So in that case, yes, let us know if you accomplish this cause i'm sure many of us will help.
Btw, i do use Adsense on other non-drupal sites. Since i live in Argentina, i don't get any taxes (only the 3% the bank keeps when i deposit the money). So you should check it out, i'm not sure, but i think the taxes apply only if you live in USA.
Taxes apply everywhere
Juanzo, you're just not reporting your income to your country tax authorities. What the bank charges is just a fee for changing the check.
Back to the theme, when the drupal-google account code exist I will run some ads on my site from time to time.
