I talked about this issue in general here #1811294: We need more press releases but probably should have started here first.
There's lots of reasons to do up press releases. DrupalCon's, community events around the world, work on mobile or RDFa.
It really shouldn't just be a place where the next one won't happen ever 2-3 years. At least every quarter there should be something to point media to. It's not like there isn't a great deal going on in the community.
The first one I'm interested in discussing is #1811296: Drupal 7 Accessibility Press Release as this is something we can really do more to talk up on Drupal.org.
Note I don't really care if this hits the front page. However, we should be making better use of https://drupal.org/press
