everythging's in the title. Acidfree is easier for my users, so I'd like to have image_pub work for them.

I've just taken over maintaining this module. I'm not familiar with acidfree, and don't have the resources to code it up myself. If support could be added in a fairly neat, modular way, I wouldn't be against looking at patches however. That said, for now I'm closing the issue - but please reopen it if you do have patches.
