I have been working on this for several days now without luck - hoping someone has an answer.
Is there a way to customize permissions on comments so that it limits who can reply to THAT specific comment?
For example, people should be able to create new comments. However, only the node author/node owners (organic group) should be able to respond to those comments to create the comment thread. So that each conversation thread will be limited to the node author and the user who created the new comment....

rather than post dupes, consider editing already existing nodes that you've created.
to the best of my knowledge there is nothing existing that does this. You will likely have to write a custom module.
