Counting number of occurences of a repeating event

Thanks in advance for all help,

I am using the Date module and creating events that recur at regular intervals.
Say EVENT-A occurs every Monday, between start-date and end-date.
Is there an api that i can use that can easily calculate exact number of occurences, given a start date and end date (as well as some exclude dates)..
