I believe this has been brought up in other issues, but it's still an outstanding problem.
Nowhere on the project page or the README is it indicated that jquery.cycle is required for this module.
On the documentation page, it's mentioned in a comment, but nowhere else.
admin/reports/status doesn't mention it either.

At least one, and preferably all, of these methods should be employed to document the requirement on this library.

The documentation has been improved a fair bit in the last few years especially this week in that regards. Mostly considering this fixed.

Support for Views Slideshow 6.x is mostly deprecated (ie bug fixes and major errors may be looked at and security issues, but not really anything else), so closing.
