In D7, we added a machine name field for projects. In D6 we called this the "project short name" (and sometimes "shortname"). It'd be good to pick a name for this and be consistent about it throughout the UI (docs, and eventually code). This was made slightly worse by #1189292: Let enforce lower case names for new projects (although I'm glad that's in).

Just wanted to capture this so I don't forget, but it's not worth spending time coding on before the D7 d.o launch. Wish there was a priority lower than minor for this. ;)

I agree this is confusing. I didn't even remember the "short name" label until creating a new module. I had to look it up to make sure this was the "machine name". There is no description or instructions, so it's really not clear.
