Type: Research Usability
Author: dries.buytaert
Watch at least 3 new Drupal users (like friends or family) install and configure Drupal, and submit a report that identifies problem areas, with recommendations on how they can be improved. This work will directly help Drupal to become a more usable system and make it accessible to a wider range of people.
Before beginning, spend a couple of hours reading about how to do usability testing. When observing new users, things to watch for include:
* what does he/she want to do first
* where does the user get lost or confused
* where does he/she spend his/her time in the first 30 minutes
* when and where does he/she have to Google/search for more information
Write a report that summarizes your findings. We're looking for a level of detail and format similar to http://factoryjoe.pbwiki.com/FeedbackForDrupal6.

webchickThis is awesome! Thanks so much!
DISCLAIMER: anywhere here I ask you to "file an issue", I mean to first search for something existing, and then create a bug report. If you're feeling extra keen, you could even try rolling patches to fix some of this stuff yourself. :) Drop by #drupal-ghop on irc.freenode.net and we can walk you through it.
That's very good information to know that you had to intervene in order to get each member of your family past the second step of the installer. I've made a note about that on this issue: http://drupal.org/node/194369#comment-652792 which I believe is critical to get fixed before we release Drupal 6.
Nice. This is one of those "we're too close and don't realize that kind of stuff" problems. :) And especially now with the "Powered by Drupal" block, there's no need to default this to anything. Would you please file an issue about this?
Would you be able to think of something that would be a bit more clear (even as a starting point) and file an issue?
Same thing here.
Yep. Good catch. We'll be working on this for Drupal 7: http://drupal.org/node/197442
Ahhh! Very good catch! Could you file an issue for this as well?
Very true. Could you share any thoughts about maybe the "top 5 improvements" we could make to this to make it easier for people?
If you could post back with issues for those things and answer the questions, I think we can mark this complete. :) Way to earn that t-shirt! :D

jeff veit commentedI've just been running through the install of D7, and I think while it's good, it could be better.
Firstly: for a completely new Drupal user, the error messages about file and directory settings gives you a link to the handbook. The page it links to does not include instructions to resolve the problems.
Secondly, the list of requirements with regard to file permissions are well known; it would be easy to construct a shell script for users to run, allocating permissions, and ship it with Drupal, instead of giving a list of error messages, and mediocre guidance on how to fix problems.

Tor Arne Thune commentedI think this would be a good issue for 8.x also, as the UX can't be changed in 7.x. Moving to 8.x.
