Idea is to leave SHS as is, but each select field (if "force select form the deepest level" - then only the deepest one) integrate with Chosen or similar widget to have manageable multiple selections.
It is so much overlap with HS module, but everyone seems to migrate to SHS camp...

There is already an integration with Chosen and multi-value fields are working, too.

I re-open this, as there is no way to select 2 children terms from different parents, even with Chosen

As I said before: Multiple selection in views filters in combination is *not* supported!
The multi-selection views filter itself has some minor (display) issues at the moment (see #1945446-12: Support entityreference field type.
