the 'best comment' that displays in the node has the right text name and links to the right page, but the avatars show up as the site's default avatar...

Hi,
simple_karma is now obsolete - sorry :-/
You can do the same thing by installing:
* http://drupal.org/project/comment_bury_promote
* http://drupal.org/project/extra_voting_forms
It would be _great_ if you could install those two modules, and let me know if they actually work.
Sorry about this, but believe me, it's for the best - simple_karma was reinventing the wheel far too much!
