Just a quick idea... (copied from http://groups.drupal.org/node/6943)
Can we rip a page from the google playbook and "fund"
DHODP or
Drupal Highly Open Dojo Project?
Offer schwag (cash?) prizes to those that
(a) Participate in the Dojo by creating new videos or cleaning up the past videos
(b) Clean up the handbook pages by making them more easily accessible
(c) Take on various tasks, related to the Dojo and/or documentation, suggest by the community (hint, hint)
Originally I posted this on the a.d.o budget page and I suggested seeding this project with $5,000-$10,000 and offering $100-$300 prizes. I have no idea is that cash exists, that is for the association to decide.
Of course the administration of doling out the cash & prizes is either going to be resource heavy. Writing out a ton of checks, making a lot of paypal payments, snail mailing t-shirts, etc. all of these take a lot of time.
Maybe we can use the upcoming DrupalCon08 as a "pay date" to consolidate the reward distributions? (i.e. when the participant shows up to check-in they get their badge, their cool DrupalCon08 T-shirt and their cool "I participated in DHODP button/sticker" and? paycheck(?))

gusaus commentedGoogle Highly Open Participation Contest (GHOP) (and Summer of Code) have proven how successful tasks and projects can be for both learning and as a way to contribute back to Drupal. We seem to be hung up on the 'if/how/who' issues when it comes to real money.
Once again, GHOP and the Drupal association could serve as a template.
Here are a few issues and/or ideas:
if the dojo provides a means to raise funds for the association)
Not sure there's going to be a way to please everybody, but I think a bit of funding/incentives will go a long way to create value for Drupal.

gusaus commentedBased on the discussion that was taking place when the Dojo left off (http://groups.drupal.org/node/8073), and now what has reemerged as a KDI proposal (http://groups.drupal.org/node/14760), there seems to be less reluctance to bring $$ into the mix in terms of how to support the Dojo. The recent lack of Dojo activity also might be an indicator that an all-volunteer effort is not entirely sustainable. Having said that, there needs to be a clear set of reasons/benefits laid out to guide/entice individuals and companies may want to support the Dojo. Some of these issues are as follows:
What are we trying to accomplish? What are the metrics you would use to say you're being successful? How would you know when you're "done"? Who would benefit from the improved website, the curriculum, and other documentation and deliverables? Who handles the money (if applicable)? Is there an org/leadership structure in place to ensure long term sustainability?
Some of these issues are already being addressed here:

gusaus commentedA very rough draft for a sponsor/benefit package can be found here - http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dg9292rd_2528x8z83f2
This is far from perfect - Thoughts, suggestions, feedback, and support would be most appreciated.
