Now some of you will be going, "aw, come ON?!" but there are valid use cases for this.

  • Dojo teacher gathering materials - kohai helps out by posting links etc to the senpai
  • Kohai following along on IRC gets confused; private message enables this user to receive (and importantly, store) relevant links, snippets, advice etc from the session (and other users) in their account for later reference
  • Personal reminders - people forget things that they promised to do/post in teaching sessions, this gives others a way to contact them that is "close" to the subject matter
  • etc, probably :p

Two things: private messaging is open to abuse, and as such I feel that this should be opt-in, or based on "buddylist" if necessary (optionally). Secondly, care needs to be taken to ensure that this mechanism is not used for OT things like bugging people for support on issue queues, etc. That's what the queues are for.

If there was a very neat way that the Senpai could use this mechanism to send lesson notes to the online members during/after the lesson, that would be sorta cool. So, teacher makes notes during the lesson, and posts them to each online user. That might be overkill tho. Another potential way that could work is by using the Pastebin and clone modules cleverly, so that users could clone their own individual copy of the notes. That would likely be easier, and more usable. Whether people would find this useful or not, I don't know. It's just a thought. People would have a way to play with the code etc on the same interface without having to cut & paste (at least temporarily).

Thinking out loud with a hangover...

Haha @ hangover. ;-) I have to say that I do feel that this is overkill and likely to really not be necessary. Sorry, but I have to say -1.

hangover++ :~/

I seem to recall there was another use case for this, but I think I forgot it halfway through writing the thing. If anyone can think of a +1 that reminds me, that would be helpful. For me, at least...

Edit: maybe I was thinking of a scenario where users could msg the teacher after the lesson with specific requests. There is often a case arising where someone asks a question in the dojo, and it gets quite detailed, and the teacher ends up saying, "talk to me about this later". The PM module would facilitate this. It's more of a safeguard than anything, I guess.

-1, don't think it's necessary. Can always use /msg on IRC or the contact form.

May want to consider using http://drupal.org/project/whisper instead if it comes to it.

Whisper is a fine idea; I only heard of it yesterday. Would cover a lot of the potential use cases without issue I think.

[14:32] i propose no/closed
[14:32] -1
[14:32] -1
[14:32] -1
[14:32] I did have a use case for that, but it escaped me ;)
[14:32] LOL
[14:32] +1
[14:32] hah!
[14:33] Senpai, ?
[14:33] * Shrop has quit ()
[14:33] I want it, but only as a reminder mechanism
[14:33] Senpai: what's that mean?
[14:33] are there other ways to achieve the goal/
[14:33] "Personal reminders - people forget things that they promised to do/post in teaching sessions, this gives others a way to contact them that is "close" to the subject matter"
[14:33] as in can we ask for reminders
[14:33] but not necessarily mean pm?
[14:33] Senpai: I'm not sure if you heard, but there's this cool new thing called "e-mail"
[14:34] ...
[14:34] that's not really PMing, email instead
[14:34] add1sun: possibly, yes.
[14:34] dmitrig01: haha
[14:34] Senpai, then how about we make a new issue for reminders
[14:34] but email takes it outside the realm of the site
[14:34] I guess it's not popular yet
[14:34] and investigate ways to do that
[14:34] I log in, and the system is reminding me that I have a leson coming up in three days...
[14:34] Senpai, that assumes you log in regularly ;)
[14:35] if they forgot, likely they don't log in anyway
[14:35] Senpai, make an issue for reminders and we will move on for this one
[14:35] or that I have to publicy reply to two questions that users have asked about the lesson I taught
[14:35] the tally is to close - any other votes?
[14:35] what senpai was saying, that was basically it - people forget - keeping things centralised is good
[14:35] that's a different issue
[14:36] if you use PM you can set that to email you?
[14:36] guys, please make a new issue
[14:36] prob. should also keep in mind that features/functionality voted down here does not mean they can't be revised in the future and/or worked on in a stand alone dojo project or working group
[14:36] so we can move on with this one
[14:36] i am closing this issue
