You may want to take a look at the messaging and notifications modules. They provide similar functionality and that's what I'm using now on a 5.7 site.
I've downloaded those two modules, but I'm not seeing the specific function that allows someone to sign-up for a pre-defined set of emails, sent periodically (i.e. the basic functionality of the autoresponder module). Am I missing something?
You have to make sure it's enabled and then in the admin section of messaging you set up what types of content you want folks to be able to sign up for. Then once your users are registered they will see a new tab on their account page called notifications. They click on that and that is where they get to select their notifications.

highfly commentedCyberpunk - Are you still actively developing this module? Or should I look to a commercial developer for bug fixes / requests?
