Can we please all get working on one patch and preferably get some reviews and feedback from the maintainer so this can go in and all the issues for this stop?

Great, I did some testing with this patch, and did not find obvious flaws! Plus points for the nice code-style fixups. So I went ahead and committed it. Also branched comment rss for Drupal 6 and released initial 5.x-1.0 and 6.x-1.0 packages, so we have something stable to work off from. Then comes more bugfixing.
