I've read several discussions around the need for standalone case number identifiers. But, unless you memorize which projects go with which number, the case numbers are not very informative.
A better solution would be to have an optional 'project code' field so the admin can customize the case prefixes for that project.
Every company I have ever worked for has assigned prefixes to every account or project (usually a 3 letter prefix), and having case numbers like IBM-345 or HP-345 would a lot more informative than 1200-345.
If left blank, it could auto increment in the same way it currently does.

jmiccolis commentedThe purely numerical prefixes have just been removed, for among other reasons their un-informative nature. I'm setting this issue to postponed as I'm not opposed to a more useful kind of prefix like you describe, but it's not on the immediate agenda.
