The default avatar is not visible on the user's profile screen, just the title of the block and below the link to the users profile.
I am using theme fblike.

did you add the "usernode:picture" field to the buddy_api_buddylist view? otherwise there would not be shown any picture.

but I'm not sure if your are referring to this...

Yes, but I found another issue.
If I set the block position above any other block, the image (which appear in the block) covers 1/2 of the following block.

yes, printscreen would be helpful. but I think this should be a theme issue...

anyway, if avatars are too big for block-view I would consider a great module called imagecache.

Not a theme issue, because ti does it with any theme I tried, even with the garland theme.
The avatar is also not too big. It just overlap vertically the following block.
I will re-install it and try to make a screen shot.
