[Solved] Default newsletter subscription at registration

Sorry if this is a very amateur question.

I'm trying to set things up so that users who register are automatically subscribed to a Simplenews newsletter. Ideally this would be without anything more on the registration screen. I'm trying to make this idiot-proof. Users can always unsubscribe themselves if they want. An alternative, not ideal, would be a tick box (checked by default) on the registration screen.

I've done a bit of searching on the Drupal website and found others looking for, or working on, the same thing, including here.

But I'm not quite sure whether this functionality has now been implemented (in which case, how to I exploit it?) or, if not, how I can achieve this. I'm not PHP-savvy, willing to experiment and fiddle around, but a bit reluctant to modify code much.
