Instead of just assigning a blanket role to each new member, is there a way you can assign a role based on the e-mail domain?

For example, all new users with the email *@smith.com will be added to the "smith" role, while anyone signing up with an email ending in @jones.com will be added to the "jones" group?

Ideally, this would be done without any interaction on behalf of the user.

Any ideas?

I paid to have this feature written awhile back. I'm happy to release it to the community but I don't know how the programmer would feel about it.
