I made custom module. It's called date_ext. For each date field in the field settings appears "Display of To Date field" at the bottom of the page. It is possible to select different formats for ToDate field if Day, Month and Year of FromDate and ToDate fields are the same. For example instead of 03/08/2008 - 8:00am - 03/08/2008 - 4:30pm it would simple show as 03/08/2008 - 8:00am - 4:30pm

This is more or less what the 5.2 version does. I won't be adding new features to the 1.8 version.
