not adding role on register

First off, I'm not sure what permissions are supposed to be assigned (rolesignup had more fields); all thats listed on my access page is "administer autoassignrole" which is more access that I'd like to give.

I enable User Role Assignment under admin/user/autoassignrole and check off the roles I want people to use. The role is listed on the signup page and the signup form does not give any errors, but the user does not receive any roles.

No combination of modules seems to help. I've tried a clean install, with/wo toboggin, with/wo nodeprofile, etc.

In addition, for users who are not already members of roles (including those created by this module), upon login i see no space where they are then able to select a role. Users dont get the standard authenticated role either, whether selected in "Automatic Role Assignment" or not.

tried both 1.1 and 1.x

Mysql 5.0.45 PHP 5.2.5 Apache 1.3.41
