And therefore I get not rid of the warning message "The Date Timezone module requires you to set the site timezone name." I think.

I faced this error while I treid to get the 2.x calendar to work. Unfortunately I'm not able to SHOW view results in a Calendar display although when I switch to "Table View" I get the expected view results. While trying to fix this, I found out that that name is not set in the the Variables table.

Additional finding:
It seems so that the original timezone selection in the form is not overwritten - have I missconfigured something ?

I get the same error, tried 3 different timezones. Maybe it has to do with http://drupal.org/node/218479? I used to get this same error, but it was just displayed in the "Status report." Now it is on every page when I'm logged in as admin.

Did you go to the admin section and set up the date timezone name there? That is what it is telling you you must do. When there, you should see a list of the timezone names to choose from.

yes, I did it several times. But nothing was stored to the database (see #1)

I saw this too when I left the choice as GMT. I switched to Greenwich and the error went away

Any reason why this isn't fixed?

I installed date and I am getting a blank page in Admin when I select Date-Time to set the name.
