I was wondering whether a sort of 'wider' general discussion forum could be of use ?
A section where people could talk on non technical aspects of drupal.
It could contain subjects where people explain their site projects which could be useful for others to
see the possibilities & variation of what can happen with drupal.
I'm not sure if my explanation is very clear, but what I have in mind is almost a laid back drupal chat zone.
Would a section like that be of any use to the community ?

I think a general chat/ideas sharing forum is a great idea. As a relative noob to drupal I have found it very useful to document whatever I managed to achive and share them on several threads. I have been pleased to see other "noobs" have contacted me by email to swap ideas and tips based on my initial ramblings.

I think a general ideas sharing forum would be great for noobs who would then become contributors and help drive drupal forward. As it stands, it is incredibly difficult to get rolling with drupal and to find the nuggets of information needed to build your first large scale community site

Being able to read others ideas & experiences can be a real help.
But the section would have to be of use to the community as a whole, from the seasoned drupalers to the person who browsed into the site, saw the logo & wondered if it was able to walk the dog http://drupal.org/node/238689
In a sense, potential users of drupal could read stuff in that section & get an idea of what drupal is all about.
It could help them to see whether drupal was what they needed.
For actual drupal users, seeing how others 'do it' can be a real incentive to progress.
And of course, the essential, sitting down & having a nice cup of tea & relax a bit.

For seeing what Drupal can do, I suggest the showcase forum. There's some real gems in there, though you may have to dig through some duds.

For chit chat, yeah, it would be nice to have an off topic forum. I don't think it's in the plans, though.
