Site5, from First to Worst

zoon_unit - March 31, 2008 - 15:43

I moved my Drupal sites to Site5 about a year ago from Dreamhost. I left Dreamhost because their mysql servers are all remote and the Drupal mysql performance was dismal.

At first, my experiences with Site5 were wonderful. Their mysql performance was head and shoulders above that of Dreamhost. Their technical support personnel were efficient. (if not as friendly as the Dreamhost guys) Uptime was great.

This has all changed in the past month. I'm now getting 2-3 outages per day which last anywhere from 15 minutes to two hours. I've repeatedly posted support tickets with documentation on the outages taken from mon.itor.us. (great service, btw) I've begged, pleaded, cajoled, and then finally threatened, to no avail. The problems persist, with no explanation from the Tech guys.

Their responses are curt and inadequate and they act like they're getting grief from a lot of other customers too. So what's going on with them? Has anyone else had problems?

I wonder if this has anything to do with their migration to a new server farm...

At this time, I would post a BIG WARNING against signing with Site5! They seem to be lowering their hosting fees more and more. That kind of "death spiral" only ensures less profits for them, and poorer service for their customers.

Anybody got a good suggestion for a virtual server site???? :-)

AN Hosting

I'm still a big fan of AN Hosting. If you haven't seen it already, check out my review.

duvien - April 1, 2008 - 09:30

Same here, I RECOMMEND TO AVOID SITE 5 AT ALL COST....

I was on a server that took them a whole day to fix after experiencing an outrage and still there are issues which haven't been resolved. And 14 hours later after i had sent a support email to them, i am still waiting for Site 5 support to reply.

Can i asked both of you how

duvien - April 1, 2008 - 17:20

Can i asked both of you how long you have been with your hosting company to recommend it to us?

In my experience, after a few months of hosting, issues starts to arise, strangely when our sites were becoming more popular. Basically, what i want to know is that have you been with your hosting for over a year now and not had a lot of issues. I don't mine the occasional server reboot as this is expected but have they still been reliable after a year? Only asking cos your sites seems to be popular ones.

I have been with WHB for

gtaniko - April 2, 2008 - 21:56

I have been with Link Removed for about a year and 3 months when i renewed i ordered an extra 2 years!

my site has over 500 odd users a day and I have no problems at all with them, the servers can easily take the load, no slowing, no mysql problems at all, everything seems to work like clockwork!

:(

I wonder if this has anything to do with their migration to a new server farm...

It's been this way for a while. I left around December before my server was to be moved (I'm not sure if it has moved or not) and had issues with the databases being down, etc.

They were a good company, now I don't think I'd ever want to have them host my sites again.

I pay for a dedicated server

Steel Rat - April 2, 2008 - 23:32

I pay for a dedicated server through Hostdime.com, so I can't really comment on their shared or virtual hosting. But their dedicated server support has been very good. I'm a novice when it comes to Linux, so if there's something I don't understand or some security/upgrade problem that pops up, they'll handle it for me. Uptime has been the best of any host I've had in the last 6 years, which is several. I've been with Hostdime for about 2 years now, I think.

Their tech support is usually pretty good. Sometimes I get a non-response, but the problems are solved pretty quickly. My average outages occur on monthly scales instead of weekly or daily. I also register all my domains through them, 6 of them so far.

Site5 is Overselling Now, Try HostMonster

seanray - April 3, 2008 - 03:30

Site5 should be a good choice before, but when they adjust their web hosting package as 1500G disk space and 15T bandwidth with very low price, they start falling into the overselling situation now, which mean the resource they have are not enough to serve their customer.

I would like you to try HostMonster.com, I host my 2 Drupal Web site in the one account. And the connection speed is very fast. You have no need to worry about the overselling situation in HostMonster due to the business model of it, HostMonster sign a monthly additional bandwidth which will make them can keep a balance between service and business growth. HostMonster is also ranked as the Top 10 Web Hositng in www.webhostingclue.com. Very cool!

Thanks for the recommendations, guys!

I love HostICan, been with them... but yea, I've heard about Site5 - I use to be with them... but they kept crashing!!! so I had to leave them, thats how I found hostican.

Stay off Site5

amitos - April 7, 2008 - 17:54

I've had to disappointments over the last year: Site5 and Bluehost. I'm currently on Site5 (drupal installed) and BlueHost (wordpress installed) with endless outages. Both admit that fact, but state that it's beyond their control. Ya, right.

On site5 I'm having 5-10 outages a day. They think it's completely fine. Unbelievable. This being said, Site5 used to be OK when I had wordpress installe about 8 months ago. Something has changed. They can no longer be considered for production purposes.

New Site5 Woes

seedseller - May 9, 2008 - 04:27

On April 28, 2008 Site5 changed their mod_security rules to disable curl/lynx/wget. The result is that they now no longer support a way of using cron on a Drupal web site. I spent some time with their tech support trying to get a resolution to the matter. The more I asked for a fix, the more rude their support people became. Every cron run now I get an email telling me that there was a "406 Not Acceptable" error. Whatever you do, please don't sign up with them unless you won;t need to run Drupal's cron.
