How risky is using ec4 on a production site? I'm already using 5.x-3.4 but I can't get contributed sub-modules like ec_live_subproducts working and I understand it'll be included in v4.

And what risk is there in UPGRADING rather than starting with fresh install of v4?

thx

this is my 2.0 cents:

(a) version 4 is still in heavy development. I've been testing the dev version for a week or two now and it's too early to think about using it on a production site. I tried the beta versions as well and they pre-date the version 4-dev version by a few months now so the beta downloads carry a lot of bugs that have already been fixed in the v4-dev download.

(b) I wouldn't risk upgrading - there's a big difference between version 3 and version 4, so when the version 4 release does come out, I think it will be safer to run with a fresh install. I stand corrected on that, but, I get the impression that the ecommerce suite of modules are being completely revamped and made more efficient. Even the file size of all the modules as a download has dropped from over 1mb to a few hundred k. So it's a lot lighter and tighter.

(c) Unfortunately, because all the attention, energy and effort is going into version4, version 3 isn't being updated at the moment. That said, the ecommerce community have been great at posting patches on here, so it's worth taking a day out and trawling through the issues to see if others have experienced the same problem with live_subproducts and posted a patch.

(d) I notice that there has been no commits on version 4-dev this month (the last commit was dated march 31st) which I hope means that there is a new version 4 beta coming out soon. I hope that's the case because from what I've seen so far with the version4-dev download, there are a lot of improvements.

Bear in mind, I'm not an ecommerce maintainer..the above is just my own observations from the past few weeks.

hope that helps...

I'm also really keen to get my hands on a stable version 4 release. I have a store that will be going live in July and if I knew that there would at least be a beta release ready for then then I'd probably put the alpha on for now and work with it and the bugs just to get used to it. As there are no dates I'm probably going to stick with version 3 but then have to do a large overhaul if you you say in part b is correct.

I maybe wrong on point (b)...perhaps it will be very easy to upgrade from version 3 to version 4.

Hopefully one of the module maintainers will chip in their advice on this thread.
