I'm struggling to understand the difference between binary and ranking polls, and knowing when to use one or the other.
To my eye, a binary poll with 5 choices where users can select a maximum of 1 choice is the same as a ranking poll with the same settings.
Any examples you could provide would be helpful.

AlexanderN commentedIn your example the 2 types could be both used for the same result afaik. So yes IN THIS CASE there is no difference. But please look at this for example: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Borda_count#An_example
You see that there are good reasons why someone need both types.
