I'd like to get users to create accounts with registration codes.

Depending on the registration code they enter, I would like the role to be assigned to them automatically. Is there a way to do this with this module?

I do not think that this is supported. I found this module when searching for exactly the same functionality. We are presently writing a proposal for a client who needs this functionality. If the job goes forward I'd like to build off of Auto Assign Role. If you are the maintainer, please reply if you would or wound not accept a patch for this functionality.

This is a good idea.

I would suggest expanding it to allow the Reg Code to be any string (or even selection from a drop down list). In this sense, it would allow the process to ask a question which only a certain set of community members would know the answer to. They could sign-up, select the proper answer to the question and get automatic assignment of a particular role. boy would that take the heat of the admins and role assigners and would the ultimate in spam control for tightly knit community sites.

It would also be nice if the user attempting to answer the question got only a limited a number of tries before their account is disabled.

I'm not a coder but I can assist with documentation and testing. Especially config, UI and functional testing for the technically impaired.
