I would be the one responsible for doing that. Someone did do a patch for the port to 6 but I haven't made the jump to Drupal 6 yet so I havn't been working on any modules for that version. I will see what I can do in the coming week.

Would it not make sense to merge or bundle this with the Domain Access module?

Yes but agentrickard is trying to minimise the amount of modules he manages. That was the reason why this was made into a separate module when it was introduced.
