How do you disable the flags in the Translation block?

The simplest way is to use CSS to hide the flags. There are other solutions in this issue queue, so you should search and be able to find them.

Thanks. As to other solutions, I wondered what the comment referred to?

I think it refers to wrapping the elements of the flag links with CSS to make it easier to isolate each part.
