Do you have use comments enabled? Top right when you try and create an image node. It may be off by default.
-------------------------------------- http://www.stephenhendry.net
Go to administer/contents and click 'configure' then 'content types'.
In the list of types, click on 'configure' beside 'image' type.
In the Workflow box, you'll find 'Default comment setting'. Click 'Read/write', and you're done.
The new settings will only affect the new image nodes created from then.
You'll have to manually enable comments in old nodes by editing their properties with admin privileges.
Comments
To better define the problem...
I have enabled the image.module, but I do not see an "Add new comment" link under the image.
I thought this would be enabled by default.
bump
This is rather urgent.
Has no one else faced this issue? My users are able to comment on pages and blog entries, but not image nodes. Why is that?

Already set
The box has been properly set to Read/write since the beginning. I've disabled it to "No commenting" and back, but that didn't help.
firstly...
Two bumps within 45 minutes will likely not prompt urgent service from volunteer forum support. Please be patient.
Have you enabled comments for image nodes in the content workflow?

Sorry...
Didn't mean to be rude, it's just that such simple functionality failing on a fresh site, was rather surprising.
Gazelle was right, apologies for the disturbance and thank you all.
configuration
So it wasn't functionality that was failing but configuration? :)
