Registration Code

Would it be possible to assign a role based on a predetermined registration key?

each role could be assigned a different registration key, soo that when new users sign up, they have to input one of the keys to be assigned a role.

That way i don't have to have a big list of roles on the registration page for the user to choose from, who some of them will inevitably pick the wrong ones.
