I'm trying modifying template.php replacing phptemplate_breadcrumb function.
Any suggestions ?

It would be better if you extend the breadcrumb. Otherwise use hook_preprocess or so in D6 ore remove the breadcrumb code from page.tpl.php. This is a core theming question... ask in the forums if this cannot solve your questions, please.
