I've got my group interested in busting free from google groups and hosting their own discussions, but we're not sure where to start. Google hasn't been much help, nor have I found any obviously pertinent hits searching drupal.org. Hints, suggestions, and pointers greatly appreciated.

Core Forum Module or Organic Groups
You could certainly replace Google Groups with a Drupal install. The core Forum module can support your discussions. If you want users to be able to create their own groups then you should add the Organic Groups contributed module. The Notify module adds the ability to have your users receive updates on discussions via email.
