I have heavily customized user profiles on my website and since I've installed simplenews they have returned to the drupal standard. I tried commenting out the view lines from the user function in the module which took care of showing the newsletter related text in the profile, but it didn't stop it from returning the profiles to their customized state.

Could you tell me where this might be overriding the theme user profile settings and how I might undo this.

Never mind, I messed up something trying to do some theming changes for the forward the newsletters in my template file....
