I've been using HS module with some success and very much like it.
I have just now created panel pages for node/add/% and node/%/edit.

The vocabulary appears with it's dropdown list intact, and it will allow me to make a choice (from a required drop down vocabulary). Upon selecting a term the the select box completetly disappears. It isn't saving the selection, because on submit I get an error telling me to select a "category".
I've gone back to the drupal node add and node create pages and HS works as before.

panels 5.x-2.0-beta5
a flexible layout, it doesn't matter what column it's in either

That's because Panels is restructuring the form, and is setting #tree to FALSE somewhere. That breaks HS' AHAH updates.

Please try this for a sec: 1) disable JS in your browser, 2) now use HS, it should work just fine.

I'll try to come up with a work-around.
