Ability to start from a certain term/level

I have a large number of hierarchical levels and each of them has many terms.

In such cases it would be lovely to be able to start drilling through the lineage at a particular level - e.g. a level defined in a preceding "parent" field.

Perhaps something like this is already possible or you have thought about solutions?
