is it possible to use a 'content type' token for the directory permissions, similar to the %uid ?
so i could have:
files/contenttype1 and files/contenttype2 depending on the content type that cck field is in

Since usage of IMCE is free of node creation and it does not care about the page it is called from, you can't have node related tokens.
