www.michaelbel.com Photography Website with photo gallery and blog.

site: www.michaelbel.com

This is an extremely simple website. I started with my existing static site content and over the last couple of weeks made a new site using Drupal. I get around 100 hits per day and just needed to have a small amount of content available with intuitive navigation for my clients.

The finished product can be viewed at www.michaelbel.com and uses Drupal 6.2, with a minimal set of extra modules including Google Analytics, Image, Lightbox2, and TinyMCE. I used the Zen Classic theme as my starting point for theming and modified that.

I also had to modiy the CSS in the lightbox2 and imagegallery modules. Everything seems to work OK!

Looks good!
Maybe you could add links on the thumbnails on the homepage. I expected to be able to click on them.

Yes, at the moment that's all one big image but I may make it link to the gallery page or the services page. Thanks for the feedback :)

great job!
simple design, but that really all a photographer needs. adding your fave venues is a nice idea.

Venues

Yes, adding the venues is a friendly way of answering from of the questions I regularly get from clients about places they have booked. I thought about having a FAQ but this way seems nicer and showcases the venues better. The venues like it too!

clean i like it alot :)

What nice clean design. I'm curious though.. how you got that gallery page so large and full of clickable images into lightbox2. Was there theming or css on that gallery page itself? Really nice.

I did a little reading and views+cck seemed a little complicated for me. So I installed the 'image' module and all the contrib modules that come with it. Then I installed the lightbox2 module and enabled that and the image modules. Through the configuration options available in those modules I was able to set the number of thumbnails and their size. I think I set it to 40 per page, 100x100px each.

To get it looking right I had to edit the CSS from various bits and pieces including my theme, and parts of the image module CSS and lightbox2 CSS. Also there was one change to PHP code along the way because I am not displaying titles or captions at this stage - but that was a simple matter of changing 3 digits somehwre in the image module :)

I know html and css, and that was enough to get all this working along with a little reading in the forums and documentation.

My only problem so far was trying to upgrade to 6.3 last night - tried and failed twice. :( Thank science for backups!

I agree

I like the simplicity of the site design as well, nothing needs to be made more complicated.

You might want to create a favicon.ico for your site though. In today's world branding is everything. :)

Yes, I managed to not restore the favicon last night. Thanks for the heads up - I will go fix that now.

Commendable effort mate,

Commendable effort mate, from someone not a professional web designer/developer this is nice lesson in simplicity. I think too often I am guilty of over thinking / over complicating my projects and this was a gentle reminder that less is more - thanks!

I like your use of image module and lightbox, very strait forward and it works, both technically and as a user interface. Great stuff!
