New Drupal Book: Drupal Multimedia!

aaron - July 9, 2008 - 16:59

Aaron Winborn, of Advomatic and Embedded Media Field fame, has completed writing Drupal Multimedia, to be published by Packt Publishing this September (and you can pre-order now)! Packt will be donating a portion of the royalties to the Drupal Association, in keeping with their long-standing policy of supporting the Open Source community.

Written for Drupal 6, this book is a comprehensive overview of integrating multimedia into your Drupal-powered web site. With hands-on examples and tutorials, the book is written for site developers, themers, and administrators. The book makes no assumptions about your skill level, although one should probably already have an understanding of Drupal and how to set up and configure a basic site. The book will guide you through its topics, gently moving the reader from basic concepts such as module set-up, to intermediate techniques such as creating views, to advanced methods such as writing jQuery and custom modules.

Drupal Multimedia is roughly split into three sections, for Images, Video, and Audio. Each section recommends the modules to use for specific tasks, and offers best practices for developing your site.

Images

  • Image or Image Field?
  • Inline images, galleries, teaser thumbnails
  • Scaling & cropping on the fly
  • Styling Views, drop-shadows, and more

Video

  • Local or external video?
  • Media Mover and Asset management
  • Embedded Media Field
  • File Field, jQuery Media, and more

Audio

  • What player to use?
  • Embedding audio clips
  • Playlist creation
  • Creating embed code & more

More!

  • Embed Widgets
  • Dynamic Image Headers
  • jCarousel Slide Shows
  • The Future of Drupal Multimedia
  • and More!

Aaron and the technical editors (including James Walker - walkah) are now involved in the editing process, ensuring the book reflects the latest and greatest that Drupal has to offer for multimedia. Look for Drupal Multimedia in September, or pre-order it now!

About Aaron Winborn

A developer for over a decade, Aaron Winborn has been working with Drupal for going on his third year now, most of that time with Advomatic, helping to create, theme, and maintain such multimedia-heavy sites as Air America Radio, the New York Obsever, and It's Your Nature for NRDC.

He has contributed many modules to the community, including Embedded Media Field (embedding third party video, images, and audio as a field for nodes), jQuery Media (a full-featured wrapper for the jQuery plugin of the same name), and Views Slideshow (turning any view, not just images, into a jquery slideshow). For fun, he's also developing RPG (an engine for creating RPG games with Drupal), and 5 Second Game (the module that will power the upcoming 5SecondGame.com).

Best time to announce this

BioALIEN - July 10, 2008 - 05:28

Aaron, you couldn't have picked a better time to announce this. One of the main things I spotted right after test driving the new Drupal 6.3 release is that HTML <object>s are now filtered out from form inputs for all users including admin.

I am sure this book will help many people who will be caught out as a result of the tightened security of filter_xss_admin(). I look forward to getting my hands on it and feedback to the community.

filefield / imagefield

jpetso - July 10, 2008 - 08:56

I wonder how this book handles filefield and imagefield if it's indeed written for Drupal 6 while filefield 6.x was only newly ported in June and a working port of imagefield is still pending. That alone should be a reason for me to buy it when it comes out :)

Necessary Speculation...

aaron - July 10, 2008 - 14:22

Some of it was written with a faith that module upgrades would (eventually) catch up. This was necessary, although it does mean some more work for me during the rewrite. For instance, in October, when I started the book, almost no one knew of merlinofchaos's plans for Views 2. We're now in the middle of the editing process over the next few weeks to ensure the book is current. And I'll jump into module upgrades as necessary to remove any further speculation on my part... ;)

Cool cool, good job with the book! I am currently writing a book for Drupal as well; certainly a very overwhelming task at times but it will be worth it! I wish you success.

Wondering if I can get it now!!

RKC - July 10, 2008 - 15:36

Hi Aaron,

Congratulations on finishing the book! Since you have finished writing the book, I am wondering if I can purchase rough-cut version or the e-book or something now as September would be late, so just wondering if there is some way I can pay and get it now even if it is rough-cut. This book should be great help.

Thanks,

RKC

I'm going to pre-order it

brenda003 - July 10, 2008 - 17:28

Congratulations!!! Looking forward to it's release.

Absolutely can't wait for this! Congrats!

gusaus - October 24, 2008 - 04:02

With so many different ways to achieve a media-centric task (which sometimes aren't that clear to begin with), a book like this will be invaluable. So much of this would also be great for lessons or interactive case studies over at Drupal Dojo. Would love to help hook that up .

Congrats again Aaron!

Definitely needed book for broader audience

bboothby - July 10, 2008 - 18:17

These questions are being asked not only by Drupal site owners or requested of Drupal site developers. Interactive, Web 2.0, stickiness, etc. are now being required to attract and keep the attention of Internet traffic. These are ever evolving technologies that are getting easier to implement, but most aren't using best practices. Glad to see these types of recommendations, especially those that use Drupal!

Looks like a good read.

HM - July 10, 2008 - 18:43

It's nice to see a book about Drupal and Multimedia.

Yes!

pixmo - July 12, 2008 - 19:11

More of my projects have been multimedia-based, mostly for instructional purposes using Camtasia 5, Flash and Adobe Captivate. I look forward to getting this book....

Well Done!

I would like to order this book with a bunch of others from Amazon.

Any idea when it will be listed there for pre-order?

Thanks,

I would certainly love to

Guru - August 14, 2008 - 15:44

I would certainly love to have it. I am already in the process of moving my site (Jhoom) to Drupal 6, and it is extensively multimedia based.

Now I have to wait till October ...
