The module author seems to have disappeared, you may like to take a look at http://drupal.org/node/228685 for the drupal 6 port that I did. It seems to work fine on my development site.

I tried your version and it seems to work well. It only works for New User registrations, not User Edits, but that's ok.
Thanks for updating this for Drupal 6.

Was the original version checking email for edits? I cannot remember how it used to work...

Yes, it was checking email for edits.

I released a version for 6.x, based on atuyo60's version. Thanks to him and reikiman for their contributions!
