I would like to allow the user to rate my post without leaving a comment. Is there a way to do this or is this an unsupported feature? Thanks!

Er.. this is the default behavior. Just edit your content type at admin/content/types/[type name], and turn on the "Direct rating widget", do not use the "Comment ratings".
